Metis Entrepreneurship Workshops

The Métis Entrepreneurship Workshops (henceforth MEW) are targeted 2-day workshops that will provide Métis individuals with an introduction to entrepreneurship and the informational resources necessary to determine the next steps in their potential business venture. Following the workshops, participants will have access to follow-up supports if required through their MTE case manager.

1.  REQUIREMENTS

  • Be Métis over the age of eighteen (18) with MNA card
  • Be a resident of Alberta
  • Are interested in pursuing a new or expanded business
  • Be able to attend both days of the Virtual Workshop
  • Have provided all necessary documentation before scheduled workshop

3.  TRAINING

The Virtual Entrepreneurship Workshops will be delivered virtually via the Zoom platform by Ballad Consulting Group. These workshops will present the realities of entrepreneurship in a manner that is supportive, realistic, and personalized for each attendee. By attending the MEW, participants will gain an understanding of what it takes to start and operate a successful business, and the tools and resources available to them on their entrepreneurship journey.

Workshop Sessions will include:

  • A professional facilitator who will lead and support attendees
  • A showcase of Métis business success stories
  • Guest speakers and presenters from Apeetogosan (Métis) Development Inc. and Pinnacle Business Services LTD.
  • A certificate of completion for each attendee

Workshop curriculum covers the following topics:

Entrepreneurship & Risk

This module explores the basic concepts that underline entrepreneurship, as well as common misconceptions. The module also covers the topic of risk and the role that risk mitigation plays in operating and starting a successful business.

Economics & Opportunity

This module reviews the basic principles of economics that apply to business ownership. Participants also learn what constitutes an opportunity and work with facilitators to identify their own specific opportunity in the marketplace. The importance of incentives is also explored in this module, along with the concept of commercial  viability.

From Ideas to Plans of Action

This module reviews the key components of a business plan, along with the resources and funding that are available to support business planning for Metis entrepreneurs.

Analysis

In this module, attendees are introduced to the basic methods of financial analysis. The breakeven analysis is emphasized as a recommended tool, and group examples are completed using attendee business ideas.

Capitalize the Endeavor

This module provides attendees with information regarding potential sources of funding for their business venture, including grant and loan programs available through AMDI and other institutions.
